Imperial Beach to Offer ‘Bikeway Village' Rest Area on Bayshore Bikeway

Cyclists enjoying the Bayshore Bikeway will soon have a new rest stop designed specifically for them in Imperial Beach.

The Bayshore Bikeway is a route around San Diego Bay that runs approximately 25 miles through five neighborhoods: San Diego, Coronado, National City, Imperial Beach and Chula Vista.

Several projects have come together in the last decade or so to create the route and now one Imperial Beach businessowner is planning on adding a cyclist rest area.

Two warehouses will be transformed into a so-called Bikeway Village. Along with special bicycle parking, there will be public restrooms, a large deck with seating and a water bottle refill station. There will also be several shops and eateries designed for those using the trail to exercise or see the sights.

City officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the project Monday as crews began construction of the modern, industrial looking building that will house the facility.

The pit stop is set to open in early September.

NBC 7’s Liz Bryant reports on the construction of a so-called Bikeway Village on 13th Street near the Bayshore Bikeway.
