Backyard Fireworks Are Dangerous and Illegal

Bottom line: leave fireworks to the professionals

Thinking about some backyard fireworks for your fourth of July party? Think again. It's illegal to own fireworks in San Diego and it's also dangerous.

Fifty pounds of illegal fireworks, mostly from Mexico and China, were blown up by the sheriff's bomb squad on Wednesday. A watermelon was also blown up to demonstrate how powerful fireworks can be in your hand or in a pocket.

"I'd go see an organized show where the professionals do it," said Sgt. Ver Dayrit from the San Diego County Sheriff's Bomb Squad. " I think you're going to get more enjoyment out of it. It'll be a lot safer pretty much for everybody."

San Diego is a high fire area. Most injuries from fireworks occur among children and teenagers.
