Barbecue Fire in University City Prompts 2-Alarm Response

An unattended barbecue fire in a University City backyard quickly spread to the house and attic space, prompting a 2-alarm response. 

The fire started at about 4:45 p.m. at a home on the 6600 block of Red Deer Street, fire officials said. 

The homeowner said she briefly left the barbecue attended as the couple went inside to watch the debate. 

Before she knew it, there was fire all along the base of the grill, and the couple called 911. The husband and wife got out safely, but the fire spread to the home and attic quickly. 

When fire crews arrived, flames and smoke were seen shooting above the home.

Firefighters put out the fire.
