Man Jumps Off RV Into Highway Traffic in Solana Beach Crash: CHP

Witnesses say the man looked to the ground and then stepped off the back stairs of the RV before his death

Witnesses say a man hanging off an RV traveling on Interstate 5 in Solana Beach looked to the ground and then stepped off the back stairs just moments before his death.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:33 p.m. on the northbound Interstate 5 south of Lomas Santa Fe according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The victim was a 26-year-old Woodland Hills man, CHP Sgt.  Curtis Martin said.

β€œThis pedestrian was seen by numerous witnesses hanging off the back of a mid-80s RV as it was traveling freeway speeds,” Martin said. β€œThey saw the pedestrian looking at the ground and then actually take a step off of the back stairs and into the freeway lanes.”

The man was struck by several vehicles including big rigs and passenger vehicles, Martin said. He died at the scene.

The RV did not stop at the scene. The RV driver may not have been aware of the incident but Martin said investigators want to speak with the driver.
