Man Who Had Explosives in Apartment Has No Known Terrorist Connection: DA

David Wasson, 32, was arrested in connection with a Chula Vista fire last week.

A man accused of having several explosives devices in his apartment, including Molotov cocktails, ammunition and gasoline, pleaded not guilty to multiple related charges in court Monday.

David Wasson, 32, is facing nine charges, including possession of destructive devices, possession of two zip guns, which are homemade weapons, possession of methamphetamine and heroin, and giving false information to police.

Wasson was initially arrested in connection to a fire that began inside a unit at the Seawind Apartments on 4th Avenue in Chula Vista.

According to the Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD), detectives found Molotov cocktails, ammunition, gasoline, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and manufactured "zip" guns inside the apartment during an investigation.

Deputy District Attorney Chris Chandler said Wasson also allegedly had a CO2 canister fixed to a propane tank.

He claimed that the fire began while he was cooking and his shirt also caught fire, according to police. He removed his shirt and threw it onto gasoline containers inside the apartment before running away.

After deputies found the devices and located Wasson, he allegedly gave a false name to authorities, but they were able to identify him and take him into custody, Chandler said.

Chandler said there is no information at this time of any connection to terrorism.

Bail was set at $200,000.

If convicted, Wasson could face nine years and four months in prison.
