A 38-year-old man was killed in a crash off Interstate 8 in Alpine Wednesday night, California Highway Patrol officials confirmed.
The fatal accident happened around 10:20 p.m. on eastbound I-8 near East Willows Road.
CHP officials say a man from Pine Valley was driving a 2001 Volkswagen GTI at an unknown rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the car.
The vehicle traveled across traffic lanes, onto the center median, and then overturned before coming to a stop.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, sustained severe head trauma in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.
At this point, it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the rollover. The crash is under investigation.
The victim’s name has not yet been released.
