Several Poway residents were without power after an 18-year-old woman slammed her car into a transformer at the corner of Pomerado Road and Metate early Monday morning.

Sheriff's officials say it appears the driver may have been distracted, they allege she was texting just before crashing into the transformer.

Deputies say the driver took out the transformer and a street sign with her Chevy Cobalt.

NBC San Diego spoke with the young woman behind the wheel, who lives just a few blocks from this intersection. She told us was on her way home at the time of the crash. The woman said her steering wheel locked up and she wasn't able to control the car.

The crash left more than 1300 residents in the dark.
