Supermarket Shoplifter Hit By Car

Police said alleged shoplifter collided with a moving car after fleeing the grocery store on foot

A man who allegedly shoplifted from a grocery store in downtown San Diego early Thursday morning wasn't able to execute a very successful getaway.

According to police, the alleged shoplifter stole some items from the Albertson’s at 14th Street and Market Street in the East Village around 7 a.m.

He then bolted from the store on foot, running into traffic.

Witnesses said that when he ran into the street, he was struck a black sedan. The collision knocked him unconscious.

The man was lying on the ground when crews arrived.

One witness at the scene said she was exiting the store pushing her infant son in a stroller when the man came up behind her and started pushing her and the stroller out of the way.

The witness said she thought the man was trying to take her son at first, but then realized he was actually trying to flee with stolen food.

Police said they have no more information at this time on the suspect’s condition or the potential charges he might face for allegedly shoplifting from the supermarket.
