Border Agent Remembered as 'True Hero'
Agents gather to remember Robert Rosas, a U.S. Border Patrol agent killed on the job
Family, colleagues and friends gathered Friday to remember Rosas.
EL CENTRO, calif. -- The loss of slain Border Patrol agent Robert Rosas was mourned by hundreds of his fellow agents, among a gathering of close to four thousand people at a memorial service Friday in the auditorium at Southwest High School.
"Ladies and gentlemen, darkness a week ago," Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar told the mourners, referring to Rosas' July 25th shooting death while tracking a group of smugglers off Shockey Truck Trail, along the border east of Campo.
Aguilar, addressing Rosas' widow Rosalie, vowed that the law enforcement community will spare no efforts to bring to justice "this scourge of humanity" who killed Rosas "in such a cowardly and despicable manner."
Mexican authorities have several men in custody, one identified as the shooter, while U.S. authorities have detained an individual arrested while in treatment at a San Jose hospital.
Eulogies also were delivered by Asst. Homeland Security Secy. Alan Bersin and Asst. Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who called Rosas "a true American hero".
Said Bersin: "We will not rest until justice is done."
