Woman Accidentally Overpays Phone Bill Online

With a simple click, a woman says she overpaid AT&T more than $900 when she was using the company’s online bill feature.

With a simple click, a San Diego woman says she overpaid AT&T more than $900 when she was using the company’s online bill feature.

Elizabeth Kozel said it was an easy mistake to make but that getting her money back was proving to be more difficult.

While paying bills online, Elizabeth said she accidentally paid AT&T $945, instead of the normal monthly bill of $50 to $70 for her landline home phone.

Originally, AT&T told her it would take weeks to get her money back.

“This is playing with someone’s credit score, with someone’s bills, with someone’s livelihood and it’s not right,” Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth said AT&T never said she wouldn’t get her money back but that the refund kept being pushed further and further away.

According to Elizabeth, AT&T paid the balance of her September bill by taking the money from Elizabeth’s overpaid balance.

“I need that money, that’s what I desperately need,” Elizabeth said. “I need to be credited back to be able to make other payments.”

Out of options, Elizabeth decided to call NBC 7 Responds for help.

Five days after NBC 7 Responds contacted AT&T, Elizabeth had her money deposited back into her account.

In an email, a spokesperson for AT&T said, “AT&T is crediting the payment back to the Kozel's bank account. We appreciate their patience and thank them for their business."
