A total of 90 firearms were turned into local law enforcement Saturday during a gun “buy-back” event in the South Bay, the Chula Vista Police Department confirmed.

The event was held by the Chula Vista Police Department in conjunction with the National City Police Department, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s office at the South Bay Courthouse parking lot in Chula Vista.

Throughout the day, people were able to hand over their guns to officials in exchange for gift cards, no questions asked.

In the end, police say a total of 90 firearms and one expended rocket launcher were turned into law enforcement during the 5-hour gun buy-back.

Last December a similar gun exchange event was held by the United African American Ministerial Action Council at the Tubman/Chavez Multicultural Center on Euclid Avenue.

That “buy-back” included $50 and $100 grocery store gift cards in exchange for shotguns, rifles, handguns and assault weapons.
