A 5-foot wide sinkhole opened up overnight in the middle of a busy street near Escondido High School.
The sinkhole, located on 1535 N. Broadway Rd., prompted emergency road repairs Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to City of Escondido officials.
Overnight, crews placed metal plates over the hole until repairs could begin.
By the morning, the sinkhole had reached a diameter of 5 ft. and was about 8 ft. deep.
Travel lanes on the busy street were reduced to just one lane both northbound and southbound.
Water Division personnel believe the sinkhole was caused by a collapsed storm drain that runs under the road. The repairs are expected to take 2 to 3 days.
