40-Plus Homes Could Be Demolished to Widen I-5

Dozens of homes could be demolished to make room for an Interstate 5 expansion project, according to a published report.

Caltrans has put together a list of properties that would be removed if the I-5 expansion takes place, reported the North County Times.

More than 40 structures would need to be completely removed if the plan is approved. Eighteen of those are in Oceanside, the paper reported. About 230 others would be affected by a loss of property along the 27-mile widening project. Caltrans would be required to be fair-market value for any loss of property.

The plan would affect communities from La Jolla to Oceanside and would expand the freeway from eight lanes to as many as 14 in some places.

If the project is approved, it wouldn't begin construction for several years.
