4 Local School Districts May Go Belly Up

A hard life lesson for California schools: a recently released report by State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson shows more than 10 percent may not be able to pay their bills, four of those districts are in San Diego County.

Borrego Unified, Mountain Empire Unified, Ramona Unified, and San Marcos Unified have all been given "qualified" certifications, which indicates they may not be able to pay their bills for the remainder of the school year or the next two school years after that.

The report shows 97 school districts in California are in this position, down from 114 last year.

The report also showed that 13 other California school districts have "negative" certifications, which means they may not be able to cover their bills through the end of next year.

The California Department of Education prepares the Interim Status Reports twice a year. The reports give the State Superintendent of Schools a look at the financial status of the state's 1,032 school districts.
