Roads to Close for 2015 Rock ‘n' Roll Marathon

The annual Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon & Half Marathon is on Sunday, May 31

This Sunday, the streets of San Diego will be filled with runners, walkers and spectators as more than 30,000 people take part in the lively, music-filled 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

Like every year, the major marathon will bring road closures to busy parts of San Diego, so residents and visitors should plan accordingly. An interactive map of those road closures can be seen here or below.

A list of road closures is available here, as well as a list of freeway ramp closures. Most closures are in effect from 5 a.m. through 1 p.m., with a few exceptions closing and reopening a bit earlier.
Some noteworthy closures include the following busy streets: 6th Avenue between Quince and Laurel streets; University Avenue between 5th Avenue and Park Boulevard; 7th Avenue between K Street and Broadway; and Morena Boulevard between West Morena Boulevard and Taylor Street, among many others.

Again, it’s best to check the list to see if your streets are impacted.

Sunday’s marathon starts at 6:15 a.m. at 6th Avenue and Quince Street at Balboa Park. The half-marathon begins at 6:50 a.m. from the same starting line.

The course makes its way through scenic San Diego – with lots of live music from local bands along the route – all the way to the finish line at Petco Park in downtown San Diego where a free festival awaits runners and the public featuring activities and more music.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon runners will be cheered on by thousands upon thousands of spectators and organizers say there are a few tips to keep in mind for the optimal viewing experience.

For starters, organizers recommend riding the Trolley to viewing areas. Spectators can park for free at Qualcomm Stadium or near any Green Line. Prime viewing areas via the Trolley include: Marathon Mile 4.9 and the Finish Line at Petco Park by way of the 12th & Imperial Trolley Station; Marathon Mile 17.5 in the Linda Vista area by way of the Morena/Linda Vista Trolley Station; Marathon Mile 19.5 at Friars Road by way of the Fashion Valley Trolley Station.

For Half Marathon spectators, Miles 6 and 7 are good viewing areas. To get there, take Interstate 805 and exit El Cajon Boulevard eastbound. Continue east to 34th Street and turn left in neighborhoods. Find street parking and walk to the route to watch your favorite runners.

There are several additional events leading up to Sunday’s big marathon.

On Friday and Saturday, there will be a Health & Fitness Expo at the San Diego Convention Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., respectively.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego 5K will be held Saturday at 7 a.m. The start line is at 6th Avenue and Palm Street and the finish line is at Balboa Drive at Olive Street.
