More than 5,000 residents in the North County were left without power Thursday night after vehicle hit a power box, causing an outage.

According to San Diego Gas & Electric, the power outage was reported just after 5 p.m. At its peak, the outage affected thousands of residents in parts of Carlsbad, La Costa, Vista and San Marcos.

SDG&E said the estimated restoration time would be around 10:05 p.m.

Officials attributed the cause of the outage to a car that collided with a power box near Melrose Drive and Rancho Santa Fe Road. The collision is under investigation.

As of 9:40 p.m., SDG&E reported that there were still approximately 800 people in the North County without power.

Estimated restoration time for the areas that are still affected -- including parts of Carlsbad and Rancho Santa Fe -- is just after midnight, at the latest.
