200 Free Christmas Trees Up For Grabs

Lot owner takes opportunity to help nearby elementary school

Christmas tree sales at one Carlsbad nursery may have suffered this year, but the surplus is benefitting the community in more ways than one.

Jereme Wilson of Wilson Family Christmas Trees says he didn't sell as many trees as he wanted this season. He was left with about 200 extra Douglas and Noble Firs.

Wilson told our media partner, the North County Times that he planned on selling up to 1,000 trees, but by Tuesday afternoon had only sold about 300.

Not wanting to let the trees go to waste, he decided to give them away for free.

"I was going to load them all up and take them to El Corazon [Dump]," he told the NCT. "I care about the trees. I don't want to see them mulched up. I want to see lights on them."

Though the trees are free, Wilson didn’t want to lose the opportunity to share the spirit of Christmas giving. He is asking donations from the people who take the unsold trees off his hands. The proceeds will go to Kelly Elementary School nearby.

The tree lot is located in Carlsbad on 4901 El Camino Real. In addition to the free trees, the lot also serves free apple cider and hot cocoa.
