2-Year-Old Drowns in Family Swimming Pool

A two-year-old girl died after drowning in a backyard swimming pool in El Cajon Friday, according to the County of San Diego Medical Examiner’s office.

A report released by the medical examiner says two-year-old Makayla Gonzales was swimming with her parents and other children at a family member’s pool in the 1700 block of Poinciana Drive around 5 p.m.

At one point, the toddler’s parents left the pool and went back in the house while Makayla and the other kids remained outside playing in the backyard.

When her mother returned outside a short time later, she found the little girl floating face down in the swimming pool, the ME report said.

The child was removed from the pool and CPR was administered.

Deputies arrived and transported Makayla to the hospital, but she died a few minutes later.

No further information has been released about the toddler’s parents. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
