2 Sailors Killed During Training Exercise

Two Coronado-based sailors were killed Monday while participating in a training exercise at Camp Pendleton, according to base officials.

The two sailors were aboard a Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) water truck, when the vehicle rolled over killing the two men and injuring another, Cmdr. Greg Hicks said.

The sailors were taking part in Exercise Pacific Horizon, officials said. The special program allows Marines and sailors to train together.

The sailors who died were from the Amphibious Construction Battalion One, based in Coronado.

Military officials have not released the names of the two men. Officials say they plan to investigate the cause of the accident.

In January, a Camp Pendleton Marine died after an amphibious assault vehicle sank to the bottom of the Del Mar boat basin during a training exercise, according to military officials.

Three instructors and three students were conducting driver training in the boat basin when the vehicle sank. Five Marines were able to exit the vehicle. The sixth Marine was trapped and did not survive.

That training vehicle was part of the Amphibious Assault Vehicle Schools Battalion.
