DOD Releases Names of Fallen Troops

Service members killed in Afghanistan identified

The Department of Defense released the names of the 30 service members killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 6.

The five aircrew members and 25 personnel from the U.S. Special Operations Command died in a helicopter crash in the Wardak province while taking part in a nighttime operation.

Several officials said privately that they were reluctant to release the names because the majority were from secretive special operations forces, including 22 U.S. Navy SEAL personnel, according to the Associated Press.
