Yacht Ablaze in Coronado

Police believe fire started in boat’s engine

A 47-foot yacht caught fire in the middle of San Diego Bay at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Harbor Police responded to the scene in a fireboat and extinguished the flames within minutes, said Ron Powell of the Harbor Police.

The two individuals on the enflamed boat boarded a Marine Corps service vessel and were taken ashore to safety. There were no reported injuries, Powell said.

Three harbor police vessels helped to extinguish the fire by using an infrared device to find hot spots and using the suppression system to put out the flames. They believe the fire was centered in the engine room.

Police are towing the charred boat to Glorietta Bay in Coronado. Damages are still unknown.
