25-Year-Old Killed After 4-Vehicle Crash on I-15 in Escondido

A 25-year-old man was killed after crashing into four vehicles Saturday morning in Escondido. The crash happened around 6:21 a.m. on southbound Interstate 15 near State Route 78, CHP said.

As the driver approached stopped traffic on I-15, he sideswiped a Ford Edge, then collided with a Ford F-450, and then crashed into another Ford F-450.

Emergency services personnel from CHP and Escondido Fire Department responded to the crash.

The driver of the Mustang suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. It’s unclear if anyone else was injured.

Traffic was backed up for approximately two and a half hours after the crash. All traffic lanes were reopened around 8:50 a.m.

Alcohol and drug use were not suspected factors in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing, and CHP doesn’t yet know if the rain played a part in the crash. The weather was cloudy with intermittent, light rain.

The 25-year-old driver, who was determined not to have been wearing a seat belt, lived in Chula Vista.
