Man Killed When Car Flips, Lands on Top of Him on I-8 in Alpine

A 50-year-old man was killed Tuesday when his car veered off Interstate 8 in Alpine, struck a boulder and rolled over, trapping him underneath, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.

The man was driving a burgundy Mitsubishi Montero at about 70 miles per hour in eastbound lanes of Interstate 8, just west of the Dunbar Lane exit when the crash occurred at about 6:45 a.m., CHP said.

Investigators determined the driver for unknown reasons began to drift off I-8 and was sent down a dirt embankment. The vehicle then struck a large boulder, which sent the vehicle into the air.

"The driver of the vehicle was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle," CHP Capt. J.J. Penner said.

The Mitsubishi overturned and landed on top of him, he said.

Medics were called to the scene but the driver could not be revived. His name was being withheld until family could be notified.

An investigation into the crash was ongoing. It was not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, CHP said.

The crash was off the roadway and did not appear to affect traffic.
