The San Diego Zoo welcomed a new baby animal to its collection Wednesday morning when a hippopotamus was born underwater inside the hippo compound about a week before expected.
The surprise birth lasted about two hours, and courtesy of the zoo, it was caught on tape.
The unnamed calf's mother is Funani, and the father is Otis. Funani has been sheltering the baby, so zookeepers have yet to determine the newborn's sex.
A zoo official said the calf weighs about 50 to 100 pounds. It is the 32nd hippo born at the zoo and first since July 2003.
Hippos first arrived at the San Diego Zoo in 1936.
