You've Been Prank'd

Terri said Quinn (not shown here) got home at 4:20 a.m. and had to roll out of the rack at 5:50 to get ready for school.

Some wiseguys at a school in La Jolla  put in a pool overnight.

The kids at La Jolla Country Day School did the installation in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Many members of the 89-person senior class showed up for school dressed in swim togs -- though not the girls, who would have been breaking the dress code -- many lugging pool toys.

Terri Proffer, who described herself as a room mom, is the mother of senior class president Quinn Proffer.

"Nobody is in trouble," Terri said. "It was a prank, but it was within the guidelines of what is allowed -- you know, no vandalism, no graffiti."

Upper-school director Rod Jemison confirmed Terri's claim.

"Today is the last assembly of the year," Jemison said.  "We have assembly every Thursday.... Traditionally at the last assembly, they celebrate. It can be very stressful. Monday, they begin their [advanced-placement] exams, and tomorrow is the deadline for them to decide which college to attend."

The pool -- essentially, the kids lined an area of an outdoor amphitheater where assemblies are held with plastic and blocked the ends with sandbags -- probably doesn't have a long shelf life at the campus in the 9450 block of Genessee Drive.

And what about cleanup? Jemison said pranks have occurred during final assemblies in the past and this year students were encouraged to be creative and not disruptive. So a swimming pool pump normally used to fight fire is primed to empty the pool, and the water will probably be used to water some nearby grass.
