A candlelight vigil was held outside Camp Pendleton Friday night in memory of August Provost as activists demand a thorough investigation into his death.

The 29-year-old seaman was found shot to death last week in a guard shack at the Marine Corps base. Provost's family said he was targeted because he was openly gay and local gay activists say there's evidence the murder might have been a hate crime.

"No one, no one, doesn't matter his sexual orientation or sexual preference, should be subjected to the kind of death like he's experienced,” activist Shonee Henry said.

Investigators have called the sailor's death a random act unrelated to his sexuality.

The Navy said they have a person of interest in custody, but have not released any more details.

Provost's family held a private funeral in Houston on Friday morning, where he grew up.
