Sheriff Joe Arpaio Visits San Diego

Security is added for tonight's event with the controversial sheriff

In light of the recent violence in Tucson, Ariz., San Diego police are working with a local hotel to increase police presence at an event with controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio Thursday night.

The Maricopa County sheriff who has been called "the nation's toughest sheriff" walked up to a line of more than 100 protesters when he spoke at a gathering in the North County last August.

Arpaio is expected to speak before 1,000 people Thursday night at the Mission Valley Marriott.

Opponents have been using Twitter to organize a large-scale protest.

Arpaio says, they can protest all they want, as long as it's peaceful.

Arpaio received national attention for using deputies to conduct frequent raids to catch illegal immigrants and for building large prison tents to house inmates.
