Federal prosecutors have opened a grand jury investigation in the wake of the Southeastern Economic Development Corp.'s bonus scandal, subpoenaing computers and the public agency's computer server, the VoiceofSanDiego.org reports.

Subpoenaes obtained Tuesday indicate that federal prosecutors from Washington, D.C., requested computers used by specific individuals, although the names of the individuals have been redacted, the report said.

A city audit found ousted President Carolyn Smith awarded herself and other executives bonuses in excess of $1 million.  A report in Monday's VoiceofSanDiego.org said at least the last eight years, consultant Angela Harris had received no-bid consulting contracts from n Smith that had paid her more than $350,000. The work was not disclosed.

A grand jury must ultimately approve or reject criminal charges sought by prosecutors.
