A Marine gunnery sergeant admitted having sex with a Marine widow in 2007 and was sentenced to jail time for adultery, according to a published report.

Stephen Kuehler, 30, pleaded guilty at a hearing at San Diego's Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Tuesday, the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The paper reported that the St. Louis-based recruiter was contacted by Michael Patton's widow, Amy Patton, in June 2007 after he was killed by a roadside bomb. Amy testified that the pair spent time together afterward, going to the movies and other activities, and on July 4 she drank alcohol that, in combination with antidepressants she was taking, made her drunk.

Kuehler invited her into the bedroom, where he lit candles and they had sex, according to the Union-Tribune.

Patton reported the incident to the Marines in August 2007.

“He betrayed Amy Patton, her trust, the trust of her family,” prosecutor Capt. Tyler Hart told the paper. “Most of all, he betrayed the trust of a fellow Marine.”
