Police are investigating a sexual assault in La Jolla after a passerby finds a woman lying on a bike path.

Investigators said they were alerted about the situation at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday when they were called by firefighters in La Jolla. The police said someone had gone into a fire station and reported that a woman was down on the bike path near Gravilla and 6600 Draper Street.

Paramedics and police arriving at the scene described her as traumatized.  She told police that she had been sexually assaulted while walking.

The woman, who lives in La Jolla, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries to her face.  Police said the assailant punched her.
Based upon the description of the attacker, officers checked the area and located a possible suspect.  The man was interviewed by sex crimes detectives and booked into County Jail.   But the victim told police he is not the man who attacked her.

Residents said the bike path is used by students who walk or bike to and from  La Jolla High or Muirlands Junior High schools.  And as shocked as they are, some add they are not surprised given the number of people who hang out along the path.
