The North County Times has laid off 25 reporters and editors, citing an ongoing slump in advertising revenue.
The paper said that newsroom cuts reduced the editorial team by about 20 percent. The additional cuts were across the paper, including in the advertising and circulation departments.
Publisher Peter York said the layoffs were needed to keep the northern San Diego County paper viable.
Lee Enterprises, a Davenport, Iowa, company that owns the newspaper, last week said preliminary earnings dropped 73 percent in the fiscal fourth quarter.
