Cop Car Hits, Kills Cyclist

A San Diego police officer whose car collided with a bicyclist in University City was responding to an accident call without lights and siren, according to investigators.

The bicyclist, described as a 64-year old man, died in the accident.

The accident shut down the intersection of Genesee and Governor Monday when it happened at 7:19 a.m.

The cyclist had just left the United Oil gas station, started heading southbound in the bike lane and then rode across traffic lanes, according to investigators in the SDPD traffic division.

The cyclist rode into the cruiser's path, police said in a news release issued around noon Monday. Officers said there were several independent witnesses to the accident.

The officer was not hurt in the collision.

Southbound Genesee was closed by

University City High School

. Traffic at the intersection, was rerouted by officers.

Everything happened so suddenly but I do remember that the police car and the cyclist were headed in the same direction and both were waiting for the same green light. Sounds to me like the cop just blew through the red light and ran over the bicyclist. They're the cops - they can do that if they want. Several schools nearby. I drive through it everyday to take my son to UCHS and I've seen many cars and bicyclists run the red lights not to mention the jaywalkers. What i dont understand is how the cop was in the intersection when i had the green light and if he was in persuit why didnt he have his sirien on? They don't run around thinking they can do whatever they want. In fact, media attention such as this reminds them every day that every action is scrutinized. And you mentioned a red light, however there is no information that states a red light was a factor, or that it happened within the intersection. The intersection given may just be the closest location to the scene.
