Sinkhole Shuts Down Mission Boulevard

Mission Boulevard was shut down Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. to all traffic except for residents.

A sinkhole measuring at least two car lengths opened up at Mission Boulevard and San Juan Place and has closed traffic from Pacific Beach Drive to Ventura Place, just  north of Belmont Park.

Aerials of the sinkhole show muddy water spilling into Mission Bay.

San Diego Water department confirmed a 10-inch water main break happened around 1:30 p.m.

Customers between San Juan and Santa Clara are without water. The water department hopes to have water service to area customers restored by 11 p.m.

The spokesperson was unaware of the apparent dump into the bay but speculated that a storm drain connected to the water main could be draining into the bay.
