A man and his brand new pit bull were snatched off a street in what may have been a case of mistaken identity -- the dog's.

The man was walking his newly purchased dog, a blue-nosed pit bull, on Imperial Avenue in Encanto Saturday, when two cars pulled up and a man jumped out of one saying, "that is my dog," police said.

The man was shoved into one of the cars, along with the dog, and driven around the neighborhood, Sgt. Mike Shirashi said.

"I have a gun. I will shoot you for my dog," the kidnapper told the victim, who ultimately surrendered the pit bull, valued at $400.

He was let go somewhere in southeast San Diego, Shirashi said.

If caught, the suspects could face kidnapping and robbery charges.
