Critics are wondering if it's time to give the homeless magnet a makeover, according to a published report.

Interested parties in the site -- including the Westfield Corp., which owns the Horton Plaza mall; and the Downtown San Diego Partnership -- say the time has come to re-make the iconic downtown spot into a gateway to the city, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The paper reported that Westfield is willing to help bankroll the effort.

"We've been racking our brains for the last year trying to figure out what we can do with the city to help activate it," Westfield spokesman Stephen Fluhr told the paper. "This is on our front door."

The mall's owners have their eyes on a $50 million renovation project involving the shopping center's northern side, which opens up into the park.
