Crews Scramble to 2nd Water Main Break

Some Pacific Beach residents woke up without water on Wednesday as crews worked to repair one of two water main breaks in the area.

The first one happened around 1.30 p.m. Tuesday on Mission Boulevard, near Santa Clara Place in Mission Beach. The other happened around 9 p.m. near Beryl and Ingraham Streets in Pacific Beach.

Witnesses said they heard water bubbling up from underneath the asphalt and before long it turned into a gushing geyser. Residents fled their homes after police advised them to evacuate.

There was no damage to homes, but residents have been without water overnight.

The pipe that broke was a 10-inch cast iron pipe -- the same kind that's causing problems throughout the city, according to water officials.

Repair crews were expected to be working on replacing the pipe and fixing the road until at least 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

About two miles away there is still a muddy mess on Mission Boulevard. That water main break caused a huge sinkhole that measured about the length of two cars.

Water has been restored to that area.
