Chelsea's Law Gets Big Boost

The proposed Chelsea's Law also got a big endorsement in Sacramento on Tuesday.

A large group of San Diegans arrived at the state capitol for a rally in support of the effort to reduce violent sex crimes in California. They traveled overnight from Escondido to join Chelsea's parents, Brent and Kelly King, on the steps of the capitol building.

Chelsea King was found dead in February in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Convicted sex offender John Gardner is being held in jail in connection to the case. The Poway teen was 17 years old at the time of her death.

Also on Tuesday, the Democratic speaker of the Assembly said that he supports Chelsea's Law.

"I wholeheartedly support Chelsea's Law, and I will do everything I can, not only to get it to the Senate but to get it to the governor, and to work with the author to get a signature," TATE REP. JOHN PEREZ said

The new law is designed to increase penalties for first-time offenders convicted of committing sexually violent crimes against children. Those penalties include mandatory life sentences for certain violent attacks and lifelong GPS tracking for those who are released from prison.
