The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will soon scour hundreds of square miles of desert in southeast California for unexploded bombs and artillery shells dropped during World War II.
Thousands of such weapons were dropped in areas east of Borrego Springs as part of training for American soldiers preparing for battles against the Nazi in North Africa.
Officials say most of the bombs, rockets and artillery shells were not live, but did contain small amounts of gunpowder.
The Corps is concerned potentially dangerous weapons remain in the areas.
They plan to start the search in January and remove the remnants.
