The California Highway Patrol is asking the community for help finding a hit-and-run driver who ran down a bicyclist.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. Tuesday along Alpine Boulevard near Rock Terrace Road in Alpine. The bicyclist was traveling eastbound when a vehicle swerved into the bike lane, struck the man and ran him over, according to the CHP. The driver then sped off.

The victim was identified by the medical examiner's office on Wednesday morning as Edward Costa, 30. Officials said Costa was a self-employed construction worker who lived with his wife and two sons in a home in Alpine.

Costa was airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries, where he later died.

"The bicycle rider was found approximately 40 feet from the point of the rest of the bicycle, probably 50 to 60 feet from the original point of impact," California Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Pennings said.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a late model white truck or SUV with a white and red license plate. It is not known if it's a California licence plate. The CHP said debris found at the scene could be matched to the vehicle once it's found.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from a nearby sheriff's substation that may have captured the accident.
