What’s considered the Academy Awards for innovative products were handed out in La Jolla Friday. Walking around the room we could see the nominees enthusiastically pitching their products. In one corner, there’s the running shoe that’s designed specifically for triathletes. In the other corner is the unmanned spy aircraft with a demo available on a video loop. The most promising appears to be  the website that allows us to upload our photo and try out a new shade of MAC lipstick or teeth whitening – all for free.*

The event, the 2008 CONNECT Most Innovative Product Awards, is an annual event that honors the development of new products and technology in San Diego. More than 100 companies in eight categories compete for what’s considered the “Oscars” of technology innovation.

The group of 24 finalists show their products at the ceremony and only eight are selected as winners in each category: action and sport technologies, aerospace and security technologies, clean technology, hardware and general technology, life science-diagnostics and research tools, life science-medical products, software and IT, and wireless communications.

“It will be something they will be able to put on their mantle and treasure for a long time,” said Duane Roth CEO of CONNECT.

One of the finalists is Gunnar Optiks.

Honorees over the past 21 years include a leukemia drug that has changed therapy and CDMA – the Qualcomm technology that led to media flow.
