San Diegans Walk to Find Cure for Juvenile Diabetes

Thousands of local families hit the streets around Balboa Park Saturday morning for the San Diego 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The 5K walk began at 6th Avenue and Laurel Street. The annual event is designed to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), with a special focus on kids impacted by T1D.

Participants – solo or in teams – walk to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the largest non-governmental funder of T1D research.

Locally, San Diegans and their loved ones were energized and ready to walk with purpose Saturday morning. Many wore T-shirts with the logo or name of their walking team.

For now, there is no cure for T1D. This leaves children as young as 18-months-old with a regular routine of insulin injections several times a day and constant blood monitoring to survive.

Through fundraising efforts such as the annual walk, JDRF hopes to someday find a cure.
