Vanity Mirror Reflects North of San Diego

San Francisco spends big at cosmetic line

Are you so vain? Not if you're living in San Diego.

The Daily Beast used residents' weight, gym memberships and the amount of money spent every month on personal care and created a ranking that places San Diego as the 13th most vain city in the nation.

So why is San Diego less vain than cities like first-place San Francisco, second-place Boston and third-place New York?

Look no further than how much money San Diegans spend in health care products, or lack thereof.

The average San Diegan spends $55 a month on products, less than half as much as San Francisco ($115) and well short of fourth-place Los Angeles ($88).

The site's process to measuring the vanity index began by taking the 25 cities with the highest percentage of people who belong to gyms. Then it took that list and measured BMI (body mass indicator) stats from the health department.

That list was then altered based on how much money people spend on personal care. The cosmetic budget got double the points.

San Diego

  • Avg. monthly personal care: $55
