Once in a Blue Moon

The first North County baby born this decade arrived at 12:34 a.m. under a blue moon, the North County Times reported.

Parents Amber and Jeff Schulman welcomed son Kaden Alan Schulman at Palomar Hospital in Poway. Weighing in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces, Kaden was healthy and seemed happy in his mother's arms on Friday afternoon. His due date was Dec. 29.

"We were thinking we were going to get a tax break," Amber Schulman joked. "Oh, well."

Doctors had planned to induce labor on Thursday, but Amber Schulman began having contractions at home in Rancho Penasquitos and was far enough along by the time she arrived at the hospital that doctors decided to let nature take its course, she told the paper.

She was pushing when the countdown to the new year began.

"It's an easy birthday to remember, and he's almost guaranteed to get a party," she said, listing those as benefits of a New Year's birthday.
