Cash for Clunkers Goes to the Kitchen

Federal dollars slated for home appliances

Another "clunker" program is in the works, not this time it's for kitchen appliances, not cars.

Details are still being worked out, but it looks like consumers will be eligible to receive up to $200 on certain energy-efficient appliances.

The program will most likely start in November. Unlike Cash for Clunkers, consumers won't get the discount at the point of sale but, rather, they will have to apply for a rebate. While the program is being funded by federal dollars, each state is able to determine which appliances will be on the rebate list. The items will most likely have to be Energy Star rated.

Rebates are not uncommon with home appliances. Right now, San Diego Gas and Electric is offering a series of rebates, including $25 for a refrigerator and $30 on a dishwasher.
