Council President Tony Young Endorses Filner

After months of silence regarding his preference for San Diego's next mayor, City Council President Tony Young endorsed mayoral candidate Bob Filner.

Young, who also represents San Diego's fourth district, announced his support for the Democratic Congressman Tuesday.

Young's endorsement comes late in the race, with just three weeks until the general election. His support comes after months of uncertainty and speculation over who the influential council president favored more.

He accompanied both Filner and his opponent, Councilman Carl DeMaio, when the two candidates announced their education plans.

On Tuesday, he said Filner's education plan was the strongest. The plan would establish connections between city social services for children and the services that the district already provides. He would establish a youth development office to serve as a liaison between services from the city and district, he said.

DeMaio's plan is to bring together education leaders and members of the community for a joint session with the city. The session seeks to determine how to reach out to underperforming schools in the district -- the second largest in the state.

DeMaio has the support of two councilmembers and one councilmember-elect. Filner is supported by Young and councilmembers Todd Gloria, Marti Emerald and David Alvarez.
