Filner Releases Education Plan

Multi-point plan would examine city services for children

Mayoral candidate and U.S. Rep. Bob Filner has unveiled a plan to support San Diego students.

While the City of San Diego does not make decisions on school district policies, both Filner and his opponent Councilman Carl DeMaio have touted education reform during their candidacy.

Filner’s 8-point plan would establish connections between city social services for children and the services that the district already provides. He would establish a youth development office to serve as a liaison between services from the city and district, he announced Wednesday at a press conference.

He would also create an internship program for kids to learn and work in city departments, said Filner, who is also a former board president with the district.

DeMaio stood with City Council President Tony Young earlier this month to announce a joint session between the city and the district to identify and tackle some of the schools’ most pressing issues. Young also stood beside Filner as he presented his education plan Wednesday, according to The Daily Transcript.

DeMaio has not released an official education plan, but has made the case for education reform with input from the city.

“By presenting a report of data, we can move toward a school performance accountability system,” DeMaio said the Sept. 3 press conference. “We will select measures based on parental and city input so that what gets measured gets done.”

The joint session is scheduled on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. Business leaders, parents and members of the community are urged to come forward with ideas.
