Texting while driving has become a more deadly trend than drunken driving among teenagers, accounting for more than 3,000 collision deaths last year, according to federal studies.
Injuries caused by texting also outpaced drunken-driving injuries. More than 300,000 injuries to teens were attributed to texting, while 282,000 were caused by drinking and driving.
Some 45 percent of teens admitted to texting or emailing while behind the wheel, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Overall, 31 percent of U.S. drivers aged 18 to 64 drove while texting.
