Surfer Survives Shark Attack Off Northern California Coast

EUREKA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man was bitten by a shark while surfing off the Northern California coast.

The unidentified victim was surfing Sunday morning near Eureka, at a spot called North Jetty, just outside the entrance to Humboldt Bay.

The injury was considered minor, and he was expected to recover.

Samoa Peninsula Fire District Chief Dale Unea says the surfer was bitten on the upper left thigh.

He was able to paddle to shore and was alert and conscious when rescue crews got to the scene around 8:45 a.m.

It is not clear what kind of shark bit the man.

Unea says other surfers had wrapped the wound and were keeping the man warm. He was taken to a hospital.

The AP was not immediately able to confirm his identity. Another surfer, Scott Stephens, survived a shark attack in the same area last year.
