Huntington Beach Reopens After Shark Sighting Prompts Closures

The one mile stretch of Sunset Beach opened up on Friday, a day after it was closed following Thursday's shark sighting.

Experts said this is a banner year for sharks in this area, near Huntington Beach in Orange County, likely due to warming water temperatures.

Lifeguards closed a stretch of beaches Thursday evening after a shark sighting was reported in Huntington Beach, authorities said.

Portions of Surfside, Sunset, and Bolsa Chica beaches remained closed until Friday afternoon after a surfer spotted a 10-foot shark, according to the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

The juvenile shark was seen about 60 yards from the shore of Sunset Beach.

A resident reported that shark sightings had been reported in the area since early in the summer. She also said signs were posted along the beaches in June.

Sunset Beach was closed from Warner Avenue to Anderson Street, but reopened Friday.
