Power Outage Darkens Businesses at Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf

Businesses at San Francisco's Pier 39 were closed Thursday afternoon due to power outages caused by stormy weather near the waterfront, according to a Pier 39 spokeswoman.

Over 100 businesses on the pier were without power and closed as of noontime, but by 1:30 p.m. power was coming back on and businesses were beginning to open for business.

The owners of the Alioto-Lazio Fish Company were scrambling to pull live crabs out of the tanks after the power went out. They used wet newspapers to keep the crabs alive in large bins.

Some fish stands were using candlelight to serve the tourists who braved the rain.

Thousands of San Francisco PG&E customers were without power Thursday due to a blown substation at the Civic Center.

NBC Bay Area's Joe Rosato Jr. and Bay City News contributed to this report.
